Anxiety in Children

What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming Anxiety (What to Do Guides for Kids)

Anxiety in Children

As parents, we all know that children experience anxiety from a very early age.  Anxiety in children usually begins with the boogeyman and the monster under the bed. Sometimes their environment causes the anxiety and sometimes a child just has an anxious personality.

Anxiety in children comes in the form of excessive crying, nightmares and temper tantrums. Some of these behaviors can be screams for help from their arising anxious feelings. For some children, anxiety can be brief and just a passing phase.

Anxiety in children comes in many forms such as a fear of the dark, animals, doctors, strangers, swimming, riding on a bus, going to school and separation anxiety. Anxiety can even manifest itself in the form of self-damaging habits such as nail biting, hair pulling, and biting.

If the anxiety persists beyond the preschool years, and if the anxiety is severe enough to interfere with a child’s daily activities, an evaluation by a professional should be considered.

Another option, and one that I have used successfully,  is to try natural supplements specifically formulated for anxiety.

I recommend Bad Dream Sprinkles to relieve these anxieties in children. I also highly recommend Calm Child , syrup or tablets! I use Calm Child  for my son who has aspergers. When he is having a melt down it calms him down quick!

K-OK Kiddie Calmer is great at relieving anxiety too! Also try Bach Kids Rescue Remedy Natural Stress Relief  it is a product brand frequently purchased at my husband’s store and has great reviews!

Teenagers with Anxiety

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about eight percent of teens ages 13-18 have an anxiety disorder. The symptoms of anxiety usually emerge around the age of 6. According to their report, only eighteen percent of these teens received treatment for their anxiety.

When anxiety takes hold of your teenager, it can be difficult to watch. Even occasional anxiety can limit your teenagers ability to live life to their fullest.

Don’t let fear take over. Natural relief in the form of natural supplements for anxiety can help alleviate anxiety symptoms quickly and safely.

A fantastic product for teens is  Native Remedies MindSoothe Jr. for Child and Teen Emotional Health & Balanced Mood.  For a better understanding on what natural supplements work for anxiety, read our article “Supplements for Anxiety”.   If you are looking for  fast acting relief try our Top picks for quick anxiety relief.

Studies on Children with Anxiety

Imaging studies show that children with anxiety disorders have atypical activity in specific brain areas, compared with other people. For example: In one very small study, anxious adolescents exposed to an anxiety-provoking situation showed heightened activity in brain structures associated with fear processing and emotion regulation, when compared with normal controls.

The Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Study (CAMS), in addition to other studies on treating anxiety in children, found that high-quality cognitive behavioral therapy, given with or without medication, can effectively treat anxiety disorders in children. One small study even found that a behavioral therapy designed to treat social phobia in children was more effective than an antidepressant medication.

This product by Native Remedies called “Socialfear Relief” is great at relieving social anxiety in children.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

A common approach to treating anxiety in children is the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a talk therapy and its purpose is to help children recognize day-to-day situations that cause them anxiety. The parent and the child create lists of anxiety producing situations. They then learn how to gradually face these fears by using the cognitive behavioral coping skills they learned in therapy.

Another approach to treating anxiety in children is through the use of natural supplements for anxiety. Many holistic pediatricians recommend the use of natural supplements as opposed to prescription drugs to relieve the symptoms of anxiety in children.

You may want to check with your doctor about adding natural supplements for anxiety into your child’s treatment plan.

We use natural supplements for our son and they work wonders for him!

If you’re considering taking any herbal supplement as a treatment for anxiety, talk to your doctor first, especially if you take other medications. The interaction of some herbal supplements and certain medications can cause serious side effects. If your anxiety is interfering with daily activities, talk with your doctor. More serious forms of anxiety generally need medical treatment or psychological counseling (psychotherapy) for symptoms to improve.

Foods for Anxiety

Did you know that anxiety depletes our body of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients?

This is why it is so important that we make the right food choices. The right food choices can dramatically affect how our body handles anxiety.

Instead of eating junk foods when you get anxious, try these foods for anxiety that will relax and calm your body.

Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are rich in B vitamins including B6 and zinc which play a critical role in the health of the adrenal glands. During times of stress, these nutrients can plummet. Sunflower seeds also contain magnesium and niacin. Niacin enhances GABA activity inside the brain, which in turn helps reduce anxiety.

Almonds

Almonds are rich in magnesium which is important for supporting adrenal function. Low levels of magnesium are associated with nervous tension, anxiety, irritability and insomnia.

Sesame Seeds

Sesame seeds are a great source of zinc. Zinc is important for the production of serotonin. During times of stress, our need for zinc increases. They also contain the B vitamin niacin which helps reduce LDL-cholesterol levels in the blood. Niacin also enhances GABA activity inside the brain, which in turn helps reduce anxiety.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of the amino acids tryptophan and glutamate. Tryptophan is converted into serotonin and niacin. Serotonin is a beneficial neuro-chemical that works as a natural sleeping pill. Glutamate is required in the synthesis of GABA. Gaba is an anti-stress neurochemical in the brain that helps reduce anxiety, nervous irritability and other neurotic conditions. Niacin along with glutamate, enhances GABA activity inside the brain, which in turn reduces anxiety.

Berries

Blackberries, strawberries and raspberries are rich in manganese and Vitamin C. Insufficient vitamin C can weaken your immune system and make you feel stressed and run down.

Celery

Celery contains nutrients that calm, including niacinimide. A stalk of celery before bedtime may even improve your sleep.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers have a cooling effect on the blood and the liver. When the liver is properly nourished it can help balance hormones, boost mood, and beat stress & anxiety.

Asparagus

Asparagus is high in the antioxidant glutathione which helps the liver function at optimum levels. Anything that has a positive effect on your liver has a positive effect on your mood and your ability to deal with stress & anxiety.

Brown Rice

Brown Rice is a slowly absorbed carbohydrate and can help trigger the release of  serotonin and norepinephrine, our “feel good” hormones.

Algae

Algae contains the amino acids tryptophan and L-phenylalanine. Our “feel-good” hormones serotonin and norepinephrine can be made from these amino acids. Algae also energizes the liver and includes nutrients that have a positive effect on the nervous system.

Herbal Teas

Herbal teas can be very effective in relieving stress & anxiety symptoms. The teas specific for calming anxiety are: chamomile, lemon balm, valerian, kava and passionflower.

How to Relieve Anxiety

Exercise is so important in controlling your anxiety. There are numerous types

of exercises that help relieve anxiety symptoms. They include, breathing exercises, cardiovascular exercises, stretching exercises and positive affirmation exercises.

Breathing Exercises

One of the main things that helps me when I am in the midst of an anxiety attack, is to stop what I am doing, take a deep breath, and start my deep breathing exercises.  Deep breathing is essential to calming your racing heart.

This is what you do. Inhale for a count of 5, hold your breath for a count of 1 , and then exhale for a count of 5.  Repeat this four or five times.  It works wonders in slowing down your racing heart and it sends a calm relaxing feeling throughout your body. Try it right now!  Feels great doesn’t it?

Here is a great video explaining this anxiety relief technique:

Another breathing exercise to relieve anxiety is deep breathing or abdominal breathing.

Lie down on the floor and place a rolled towel under your head and neck. Place one hand on your chest and one on your abdomen. Close your eyes and inhale deeply and then breath out slowly.

Concentrate on the rhythm of your breathing. Feel your hand on your stomach move with your breathing. Continue breathing in and out concentrating only on your breath and the movement of your abdomen.

Remain in this position for 10 minutes, but don’t fall asleep! Wow! what a great way to relax!

Cardiovascular Exercises

The second exercise I recommend to relieve anxiety  is cardiovascular or aerobic because it relieves muscle tension and burns stress hormones.

Cardiovascular exercise also releases your endorphin hormones. I call them my “feel good” hormones because they help lift my mood and make me feel good.

Try these exercises for at least 20 minutes three times a week. Walk briskly in your neighborhood or in a park, swim, jump on a trampoline, ride bikes with your children, or go for a jog.

All of these exercises help discharge tension and reduce levels of stress-related hormones in your body.

Stretching Exercises

The third exercise I recommend to relieve anxiety is stretching.

A gentle form of stretching  can improve your posture and overall flexibility and relieve your body of stress related tension and muscle aches.

These exercises can be mentally soothing and thus great for controlling your anxiety.

Positive Affirmation Exercises

The final exercise I recommend to relieve anxiety is to use positive affirmations to change your thinking habits.

There is strong evidence that changing your thinking habits drastically helps control your anxiety. The trick is to learn new ways of thinking and develop a method for changing your old thinking patterns.

Our old thinking patterns allow anxiety to take over and hold our thoughts captive. Thus creating anxious thinking which eventually becomes a full blown anxiety attack. If we can change our thought patterns through positive affirmations, we can begin to alleviate our anxiety attacks.

Practice saying positive statements such as these to yourself so that when your mind starts to race, you can use these to counteract the anxiety attack.

  • My feelings don’t make sense right now. I have control over  my feelings and I can choose to overlook them.
  • These feelings can exist only if I allow them to.
  • I can feel anxious and still focus on what I am doing in the moment.
  • I have felt stressed like this before and I survived. I will survive now too.

One of the best ways to relieve anxiety symptoms is through the use of natural supplements for anxiety. We have hand selected the best quality and scientifically proven natural supplements for anxiety relief on the market today. Please check them out in our Supplement Store and read about them in our article Natural Supplements for Anxiety.

Remember to check with your doctor before beginning any exercise routine.

If you’re considering taking any herbal supplement as a treatment for anxiety,  or starting an exercise program, talk to your doctor first, especially if you take other medications. The interaction of some herbal supplements and certain medications can cause serious side effects.
If your anxiety is interfering with daily activities, talk with your doctor. More serious forms of anxiety generally need medical treatment or psychological counseling for symptoms to improve.

Natural Supplements for Anxiety

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), about forty million American adults suffer from some form of anxiety disorder. The research also shows that anxiety is the #1 mental health problem

among American women and is second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can actually be beneficial in some situations. For instance if you are going to take a test or give a speech, your anxiety motivates you to thoroughly prepare. However, if your anxiety affects your day-to-day living and lasts for more than six months, you may need to seek help from your doctor to see if you have an anxiety disorder.

Whether you have a full-blown anxiety disorder or are just experiencing temporary anxiety, you may want to try some of these natural supplements for anxiety to relieve your anxiety symptoms. Some of the best natural supplements for anxiety on the market today are discussed below. Some of these supplements start working right away, while others may help lessen anxiety over time.

Passionflower

Passionflower is a plant. The parts of the plant above the ground are used to make medicine. This plant is used for insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, anxiety, GAD, and narcotic drug withdrawal. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates the scientific evidence of passionflower as possibly effective for anxiety. They also state that there is evidence that passionflower can sometimes reduce symptoms of anxiety, as effectively as some prescription medications.

Passionflower helps produce rest and natural sleep without a “drugged” feeling and it can help decrease blood pressure. The sedative properties of passionflower make it useful for calming the nervous system and promoting sleep.

Passionflower is found in combination with other sedative herbs such as chamomile, hops, kava, skullcap and valerian to promote calmness and relaxation. Passionflower can be taken in 250 mg capsules or 1 ml tincture form or 4 to 8 grams daily.

Since passionflower causes drowsiness, don’t take it when you are also taking a prescription sedative. Avoid passionflower during pregnancy. Don’t take passionflower for longer than one month at a time.

Passionflower is generally safe for most people when taken for less than two months. It is possibly unsafe if taken in large amounts. Some people experience side effects such as dizziness, confusion, irregular coordination, inflamed blood vessels, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and a rapid heart rate.

Kava

Kava has been used on the islands of the South Pacific for over 300 years. Numerous studies have been done on kava’s ability to relieve anxiety. There is strong evidence proving that kava is superior to placebo in treating anxiety and comparable to tricyclic antidepressants (Asendin and Norpramin) and to low doses of benzodiazepines (Xanax).

Native Remedies Zenx is a great product containing Kava & Passionflower.

Kava can be taken as a capsule, tincture or extract form. There is not a standard dosage but successful clinical studies have used dosages from 210 mg per day to 400 mg per day. Check with your doctor prior to taking any dosage of kava.

The Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings about the potential for kava to cause severe liver damage. However, kava sales have not been banned in the United States. I would avoid using kava if you have liver problems or take medications that affect your liver. Other possible side effects are blurred vision, nausea, loss of appetite, and shortness of breath.

Valerian

Valerian is a wild plant with pink or white flowers that grows in damp places. Numerous studies were done on the effects of valerian on sleep and it was discovered that valerian improved anxiety, mood and general well-being along with insomnia. The people in Europe have been using valerian for over 100 years to treat menopausal nervous anxiety, hysteria, and nervous irritability. Valerian was even used during World War I as a tranquilizer to treat soldiers suffering from shell shock.

Valerian is an economical, natural sleep solution. It calms your mind to ease you into sleep. High quality valerian helps those who periodically have trouble falling asleep and who wake and toss and turn in the middle of the night.

Most people take valerian as a capsule or tincture. If taken for insomnia it should be taken in the evening 30 to 90 minutes before bedtime. If taken for anxiety it should be divided into two or three doses throughout the day. We recommend taking valerian in capsule form because of the musty taste.

Valerian is generally considered safe at the recommended guidelines. Start at a low dose and gradually increase the dosage. Side effects may include mild headaches, nausea, nervousness, and palpitations. However, controlled studies are rather vague about the side effects of valerian and report only that they are low.

L-theanine (or green tea)

The amino acid in green tea is called L-theanine. It helps you relax and calms mind chatter. L-theanine is involved in the production of GABA, a neurotransmitter that has a calming effect. GABA also helps neutralize glutamate, a brain chemical that causes excitement.

Research shows that L-theanine helps curb a rising heart rate and blood pressure, and a few small human studies have found that it reduces anxiety. In one study, anxiety-prone subjects were calmer and more focused during a test if they took 200 milligrams of L-theanine beforehand.

L-theanine is safe for most people. Some people may experience stomach upset and constipation.

Life Extension Mega Green Tea Extract -Decaf is one of the green tea products we highly recommend.

Lemon balm

Lemon balm has been used at least since the Middle Ages to reduce stress and anxiety, and help with sleep. Lemon balm is a slightly warming, sweet-tasting herb that also acts as a mild anti-depressant. In one study of healthy volunteers, those who took standardized lemon balm extracts (600 mg) were more calm and alert than those who took a placebo.

Lemon balm is sold as a tea, capsule, and tincture. It’s often combined with other calming herbs such as hops, passionflower,  chamomile, and valerian.

Lemon Balm is generally safe, but side effects of increased anxiousness were noted on subjects who took an excessive amount of lemon balm. Just make sure to start with a smaller dose. If pregnant, use only half the suggested amount.

Chamomile

Chamomile has been used for various health conditions for thousands of years. It is used today for sleeplessness, anxiety and gastrointestinal upset. Some compounds in chamomile bind to the same brain receptors as drugs like Valium.

In one study at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, in Philadelphia, patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) who took chamomile supplements for eight weeks had a significant decrease in anxiety symptoms compared to patients taking a placebo.

Chamomile can be taken as a liquid extract, or in capsule or tablet form.

Side effects include allergic reactions such as skin rashes, swelling of the throat, shortness of breath and  anaphylaxis. These side effects may occur with people who are allergic to related plants in the daisy family.

Herb Pharm Certified Organic Chamomile Extract for Calming Nervous System Support – 1 Ounce is an extract we highly recommend.

Omega-3s (fish oil)

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to normal brain function. They contain EPA and DHA and are crucial in dealing with stress. There is preliminary evidence that they influence serotonin production. Scientific studies show that fish oil has a positive effect in treating anxiety. In one study, students who took 2.5 milligrams a day of mixed omega-3 fatty acids for 12 weeks had less anxiety before an exam than students taking a placebo.

Fish oil is safe for most people when taken in low doses. There are some safety concerns when taken in high doses. Don’t take more than 3 grams per day.  Some side effects include belching, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, loose stools, rash and nosebleeds. If you take these supplements with a meal, it can decrease these side effects. Do not take fish oil supplements if you have a seafood allergy.

The best quality fish oils come from Nordic Naturals! They are #1 in our family and my son loves the taste!

In fact,  Nordic Naturals – Omega-3 Lemon1000mg, 180 Count. is the product my son loves and never complains about having to take.

B-Complex Vitamins

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) can help alleviate depression and anxiety attacks.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) aids in the production of natural antidepressants such as dopamine and norepinephrine. The body requires B6 to make serotonin.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) helps relieve irritability, improve concentration, increase energy, and maintain a healthy nervous system.

Vitamin B3 (niacin) helps with anxious feelings and is calming.

During high levels of stress the B Vitamins are burned up and consumed at higher levels. Research has shown that the majority of the emotionally ill are deficient in one or more of the B-complex vitamins. Studies also show that the B vitamins are natural stress reducers and that not getting enough of them can cause anxiety. We recommend Doctor’s Best Fully Active B Complex Nutritional Supplement, 30 Count

Suggested use is to take one 100 mg time released B-complex vitamin daily after a meal. It is suggested that if you are going through a very stressful period of time that you take a vitamin B3 in the form of niacinamide at 100 mg three times a day. We recommend Solgar Niacin Vitamin B3 Tablets, 100 mg, 100 Count

B-Complex vitamins are safe for most people. However, the possible side effects of vitamin B12 in some people are diarrhea, blood clots, itching, serious allergic reactions. The possible side effect of vitamin B6 if taken at high levels for longer that a year can cause severe nerve damage. The symptoms usually stop when you stop taking the supplements. Other symptoms include painful skin patches, sensitivity to sunlight, nausea and heartburn.

I chose these as the best natural supplements for anxiety because they were scientifically researched more than other types of natural supplements. In addition, they have been proven to be effective in controlling anxiety.

There are other types of natural supplements for anxiety such as 5-HTP ,
Gaba,  St. John’s Wort, Sam-E , Vitamin E,Trace Minerals, Ashwagandha,

Rhodiola ,L-Arginine, L-Lysine,L-Tyrosine. They are often used for anxiety too, but have not been studied as thoroughly. They are still undergoing clinical research for their effectiveness on anxiety.

You can link to the companies that sell our recommended natural supplements for anxiety in our hand selected Supplement Store.

Caffeine & Anxiety

I woke up this morning feeling so great because of the beautiful day! I couldn’t wait to get started.

I drank my morning cup of joe, ate my breakfast and about 30 minutes later started to feel a little irritable. I knew that if I took a walk, my feel good endorphins would kick in and I would feel a lot better.

I went for my walk and was feeling on top of the world. I came up with some new, creative ideas and couldn’t wait to get home to write them down and to start my research on them.

When I arrived back home, I decided to eat lunch and drink some good old fashioned southern iced tea. After drinking the tea, I sat down to start researching some of my new ideas. However, I noticed that I was so anxious, I couldn’t even think straight. My mind was foggy and I was shaking from anxiety. I couldn’t work at all. It was a waste of time.

I decided to go for another walk to clear my mind. During my walk, it dawned on me that the reason I was feeling so anxious and foggy headed was from the tea I drank. It was the caffeine! Oh my goodness, I never realized what a negative affect caffeine had on my anxiety. Needless to say, after my experience today, I am going to take caffeinated tea off my daily menu.

Wow! Until today, I did not realize what an affect caffeine had on my anxiety! I did a little research and this is what I found:
(Please continue reading after the video.)

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) ninety percent of Americans use caffeine daily, some substituting it for sleep. While the stimulant enhances alertness and concentration, it’s been unclear whether it also helps learning and memory. The NIMH also states that since caffeine can aggravate the symptoms of anxiety disorders, it should be avoided.

Caffeine works by blocking the depressant function of a chemical called adenosine and usually results in a pleasurable feeling. However, if you drink too much coffee or tea, this same stimulant can exacerbate anxiety and panic disorders. If you are predisposed to anxiety, the caffeine can trigger a full blown anxiety attack and cause you to break out in a cold sweat, experience a racing or pounding heart, hear ringing in the ears and lose the ability to focus.

In conclusion, If you tend to be a person who has anxiety, using a lot of caffeine can be risky. The use of caffeine may be adding more stress to your life. You may be able to improve the quality of your life by simply cutting caffeine out of your diet. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to quit caffeine for a little while or switch to de-caffeinated and see if your anxiety symptoms improve.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency & Neuropathy

I gradually began to have numbness and tingling in my hands and feet. I would wake up

in the middle of the night and my arms would be asleep. I really became concerned when I woke up one morning, stood up and could hardly walk. My feet felt like they were on fire and I had sharp piercing pain on the bottom of my feet like someone was sticking needles in me.

I became very anxious about this and started worrying excessively about having neuropathy. When the symptoms worsened, I went to see my doctor. The doctor was concerned that I might have diabetic neuropathy so she ordered lab tests. Thank goodness  the lab results came back negative.  I didn’t have diabetes!

It was horrible! I could not walk without having this stabbing, burning pain and the doctors did not know what was causing it. I tried different kinds of gel pads in my tennis shoes, but the pads were of little help. Eventually, the pain was so bad that I could no longer wear regular shoes or flip flops.

Side note** I finally found a pair of shoes I could wear without adding gel pads and my feet started to feel a little better. They were Go Walk Skechers.
This surprised me because I don’t usually like Skecher shoes. Trust me, if you have feet problems, give the Go Walk Skechers  a try. Back to the story…

As the burning and needle like pain increased, my anxiety worsened. I made another visit to the doctor. This time she said my feet appeared to have a fungus so she gave me a prescription for anti-fungal cream. I used the cream as directed and soaked my feet in Epsom salt nightly, but the burning and stinging pain persisted. In addition, I was still waking up in the middle of the night with my arms and fingers tingling and numb.

I was really getting anxious and contemplating scheduling an appointment with a specialist when my husband brought home a Vitamin Retailer Magazine. One of the articles in the magazine caught my eye. It was an article about Vitamin B12 deficiency. The article described the symptoms of a Vitamin B12 deficiency and they were the same symptoms that I was having.

My husband works at a health food store, so the next day he brought me home a bottle of  Jarrow Formulas Methyl-B12. The article said to take 2000 mcg for one month and then to decrease to 1000 mcg after a month.

I immediately starting taking the Methyl-B12 1000 Mcg.  After a couple of days, the burning started to decrease. After a week, the needle like pain began to subside. Within 3 weeks my feet were pain free and I started wearing regular shoes again. In addition, my arms & fingers stopped falling asleep in the middle of the night. Hurray! My feet are pain free!

I continue to take Vitamin B12 Methyl every day. If I stop for too long, the burning and needle like pain return.

If you are having burning sensations and needle like pain in your feet, I suggest you try Vitamin B-12 Methylcobalamin to see if it helps you like it did me. Make sure you check with your doctor first.

It is very important to only use a high quality Vitamin B12 with Methylcobalamin from a reputable manufacturer which are listed in our supplement store: Jarrow, Life Extension, Natural Factors, Solgar, or Doctors Best. If you use a low quality B12 without Methylcobalamin, you may not see any results. The Methylcobalamin (Methyl for short) is what makes the difference.

Did I mention that my anxiety is better too? I don’t know if it is because I am taking Methyl-B12 or if it’s just because I don’t have to worry about my feet anymore.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is normal and healthy when the fear motivates us to get out of danger, or

to prepare for a particular event, as long as we return to a normal state after the event has past.

Anxiety becomes a problem when we experience excessive irrational fears that begin to interfere with our day-to-day life and when it lasts for at least six months. The symptoms will become worse if left untreated.

Five common types of anxiety disorders are: generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

A person may suffer from just one or from several of these disorders at the same time. In addition, forty to fifty percent of the people who suffer from anxiety disorders also suffer from depression. The following is a brief overview of each of these anxiety disorders. (Check out our Top Picks for Quick Anxiety Relief!)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

People with generalized anxiety disorders tend to worry excessively about things. They feel restless and on edge. They find it difficult to control their worries and are often irritable and impatient. Due to their constant worrying, they experience muscle aches, insomnia, fatigue, dizziness, sweating and nausea.

Social Anxiety Disorder

People with social anxiety have a fear of being embarrassed or humiliated.

Native Remedies Socialfear Relief

They have a fear of performing or speaking in front of a group. They are afraid of being judged and tend to avoid crowds. Their fear usually causes them to sweat, tremble or stutter.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

People with OCD harbor obsessions and ritual compulsions such as repeatedly washing their hands, cleaning and recleaning their house, constantly checking to see if they left the stove on, and hoarding.

Panic Anxiety Disorder

People with panic attack disorders experience repeated, unexpected

attacks of terror, accompanied by dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, sweating, and heart palpitations. Often they are rushed to the hospital because their symptoms so closely resemble a heart attack.Native Remedies Agorafear Relief

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Many people develop PTSD symptoms after experiencing a severe traumatic event such as rape, physical abuse, physical assault, or wartime experiences. These individuals may become so preoccupied with the traumatic experience that they are unable to lead a normal life.

They constantly relive the trauma in the form of recurring flashbacks or nightmares. They begin avoiding situations that trigger these feelings. They feel agitated and irritable and have trouble concentrating, sleeping and are easily startled.

Whether or not you are experiencing the above types of anxiety disorders or are just experiencing every day normal anxiety, you might want to consider contacting a holistic doctor or your primary care physician for an evaluation.

Ask your doctor about incorporating natural supplements for anxiety into your treatment plan.

Remember how I told you I would let you know if any other positive changes occurred as a result of my eating healthier to control my anxiety?

Well, I have now discovered relief for my acid reflux.

I have had acid reflux for about 15 years. I have been taking Zantac once and sometimes twice a day to contol my reflux. However, I’ve noticed that in the past three months I’ve  rarely experienced any acid reflux.

In examining the question, “What was I doing different that would result in the reduction of my reflux?” I figured it out. It is the ginger and cinnamon in the pancakes that I have been eating every morning for the past four months.

If you read my article on hair growth, you’ll see how these pancakes also helped me with my hair, skin and nails.

I started eating these pancakes because I had to make gluten free pancakes for my son every morning before he went to school. Since I had my son’s left over pancake batter, it was easy to just add healthy ingredients to the batter to make my breakfast.

This is how I make my pancakes:

  • 1 Cup Bisquick Gluten-free Pancake Mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup coconut or almond milk
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon flax seed
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Maca Powder
  • 1 tablespoon cranberries or blueberries
  • Add walnuts or pecans if you want to make it really yummy!
  • Heat your griddle and use virgin coconut oil

The batter will be really thick, just use a spoon to spread it out. Brown on one side then flip the pancake over and brown the other side.

Serve with Organic Aguave Syrup

Another great thing about these pancakes is that they will fill you up quick! You probably won’t even be hungry for lunch. I usually don’t get hungry again until around 4:00 in the afternoon.

Oh yea! Did I mention, they will cleanse you too? If you have a problem with constipation, these pancakes will definitely solve your problem.

In conclusion, if you have acid reflux or consitipation, give these pancakes a try. They have definitely helped me and I feel certain they will help you too.

P.S. I think the fact that I have cut down on caffeine has also contributed to my reduction in acid reflux. Read my my article on Caffeine and Anxiety for more information .

Calm Child for Anxiety in Children

If you have an anxious child, I highly recommend Planetary Herbals – Calm Child .  I use this natural supplement for anxiety for my son and it calms him down quick. Recently, he left school early because of anxiety and refused to go back. I asked him to take a couple of Calm Child tablets to see if they would help him. Thirty minutes later, he came to me and said “Okay Mom, I’m ready to go back to school now.” It was a miracle! Needless to say, Calm Child has been my favorite product for his anxiety ever since.

Another reason I trust Calm Child for my son is because it is manufactured by Planetary Herbals and was formulated by renowned herbalist Michael Tierra, L.Ac., O.M.D., an authority on the world’s herbal traditions, and is used daily in his clinical practice.

In addition, Planetary Herbals produces a line of natural products that provide the best of what modern herbalism and science have to offer.

How Calm Child Works

Because children today live in a stressful world, over stimulation can affect their behavior and concentration. Calm Child is a safe, natural, special herbal blend that soothes and relaxes ultra-active kids. It is designed to soothe the minds and bodies of children, particularly in their moments of anxiety and stress.

Young children’s nervous systems are sensitive to stressors, and they have not yet developed the coping skills for expressing frustration or releasing pent-up emotions healthfully. Unfortunately, television, chemically adulterated and sweet foods, plus the stimulation of everyday life can cause high levels of anxiety and excitement for children. All this can affect their ability to learn and affect thier development of positive social skills.

Calm Child helps counter the effects of over-stimulation. It works in two important ways to help cultivate a centered sense of well-being and confidence for children.

First, it uses lemon balm and chamomile to gently ease the effects of over-stimulation.

Second, it uses Chinese zizyphus, gotu kola, amla, and hawthorn berry to tonify the child’s system, lessening sensitivity to stressors.

Together the ingredients in Calm Child help take the stressful edge off troublesome days, while increasing your child’s ability to focus and deal with stress and anxiety.

Healthy Eating Plan

Did you know that eating good food feels good? Wouldn’t it be

great if everyone came to a point where they wanted to eat healthy just because they wanted to feel healthy! I believe that many times the reason we feel anxious or depressed is because of the foods we eat.

Because our diets do not contain the nutrients that our body needs we continue to feel worse instead of better. By adding live, organic power foods to our diet we can begin to feel better and thus be more motivated to stay on a treatment plan to control our anxiety.

Most people look at diets as just a way to lose weight. But your diet is so much more than that. Healthy eating can fight fatigue, increase your energy, combat disease, brighten your mood, improve your skin, hair and nails and of course, control your weight.

I have found that an easy way to get live nutritious foods that cleanse, detoxify and fill our bodies with healing nutrients is through delicious fruit and green smoothies.

All it takes to start down the road to a healthier you is to add at least one green smoothie to one of your daily meals. Drink it just before sitting down to eat your meal. You don’t have to replace your meal, just add it to your meal.

Healthy Food List

Organic Vegetables

We recommend fresh, organic vegetables. The fresher the better!

Arugula, Basil, Beet Greens, Bok Choy, Broccoli, Cabbage, Celery, Chard, Cilantro, Collards, Kale, Mixed Greens, Mint, Mustard Greens, Parsley, Spinach, Turnip Greens

Fresh Fruit

To sweeten and enhance the flavor of your smoothies, add these scrumptious fruits:

Apricot, Apple, Avocado, Banana, Bell Pepper, Blackberries, Blueberries, Cherries, Cantaloupe, Cranberries, Cucumber, Grapes, Grapefruit, Guava, Honeydew, Kiwi, Lemon Limes, Mango, Orange, Papaya, Pear, Peach, Pineapple, Plums, Raspberries, Star Fruit, Strawberries, Tomato, Watermelon

If you like a sweeter smoothie, try Agave Nectar, Stevia or Honey. Whatever you do, don’t add artificial sweeteners or sugar!

Super Foods

To further boost the nutrition in your smoothies, add these super foods:

Acai Berries, Almond Butter, Aloe Vera, Avocado, Bee Pollen, Cayenne Pepper, Chia Seeds, Coconut Milk and Coconut Water, Flax Seed, Garlic, Ginger, Maca Powder, Pumpkin, Raw Chocolate, Sprouts and Wheatgrass

It’s amazing how easy it is to make these smoothies and how they are a complete meal packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, fat and antioxidants! And so delicious!

Blenders for Smoothies

To get started you will need a blender. I suggest the Blendtec Total Blender. The reviews on this blender are excellent! It is super powerful and easy to clean!

You can also use a more economical blender like the Ninja Professional.

Ninja Professional Blender (NJ600)

This single server Nutri Bullet Pro 900 Series is effortless for beginners!

Once you fall in love with smoothies and start using your blender on a daily basis, you’ll probably want to upgrade to a more powerful and durable blender. A good blender makes a better consistency and better tasting smoothie.

How to Stack the Blender

The proper way to make a smoothie is to layer the ingredients:

Bottom – Liquids
2nd layer – Solids
3rd layer – Frozen fruit or ice
4th Layer – Greens
5th Layer – Seeds or oils

If you’re not ready to purchase a more powerful blender here are some tips to help lessen the burden on your blender:

  • Avoid leafy chunks of greens by blending them first with some liquid. Then add the remaining ingredients and finish blending.
  • If you are going to use frozen fruits, defrost them prior to adding them to the blender.
  • If the motor sounds like it’s stuck, add a little more liquid.

That’s It! Grab some great recipes and your ready to blend!

Detox Smoothie

Since it is important to detoxify prior to beginning any new nutritional protocol, i.e. adding natural supplements for anxiety to your treatment plan, we recommend you start with this 3 day detox and cleanse smoothie recipe.

To detox and cleanse your body, drink these three smoothies for 3 consecutive days.

Healthy Tips

  • Need an anti-inflammatory? Try adding 20 cherries to your smoothies daily. Cherries are great for sore joints and throbbing headaches. The secret is the anthocyanins found in the red color of the cherry.
  • Add a cup of strawberries, raspberries or blueberries to help with pain. The secret is cyanidin, a plant compound that soaks into tissues and relieves inflammation.
  • Add a cup of fresh pineapple to your smoothie daily to recover twice as fast from painful bruises and other injuries. The secret is the bromelain, a powerful enzyme that speeds healing.
  • Do you have a tummy ache? Add 1/4 tsp of fennel seeds to your smoothie. Fennel seeds contain essential oils that improve digestion, slow down the formation of gas bubbles and prevent digestive tract muscles from spasming.
  • Feeling a little anxious? Add almonds to your smoothie. Almonds contain calming magnesium and blood sugar stabilizing protein that work together to calm the jitters.

Metallic Taste in Mouth

Suddenly, I began to have a metallic taste in my mouth.  Of course, I immediately became anxious. I began to remember what happened to me back in 1996.

In the fall of 1996 I had a sudden metallic taste in my mouth. Everything had a metallic taste. The sweeter the food the more metallic and bitter the taste. Eventually, the only thing I could eat was chicken noodle soup.

The doctor examined me and ran several blood tests but could not determine the cause of the metallic taste. I suffered with this for three months, and suddenly, right after Christmas, my taste buds returned to normal and I could eat again! I never knew what caused the sudden metallic taste in  my mouth.

Therefore, when this metallic taste reared its ugly head again, I decided to do some of my own research. Unfortunately, back in 1996 I could not reserach it because I did not have a computer and did not know about the vast knowledge of the world wide web.

What causes a metallic taste in your mouth?

  • Poor oral hygiene – Teeth and gum problems such as gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth infection from not brushing and flossing on a regular basis.
  • Prescription drugs – Antibiotics such as tetracycline, the gout medicine allopurinol, lithium and some cardiac medications can cause this metallic taste because your body absorbs the medicine and it comes out in the saliva.
  • Over-the-counter medicinals– Multivitamins that contain copper, zinc or chromium and cold remedies such as zinc lozenges can cause a metallic taste. Other over-the-counter products that can cause a metallic taste are prenatal vitamins,  iron and calcium supplements.
  • Infections – Upper respiratory infections, colds and sinusitis can give you a metallic taste in your mouth.
  • Cancer treatment – Patients being treated for cancer with chemotherapy or radiation may experience a metallic taste.
  • Pregnancy – During the early stages of pregnancy some women experience a  metallic taste in their mouth.
  • Dementia – People with dementia often have taste abnormalities because their taste buds are connected by nerves to the brain.
  • Chemical exposures – Exposure to mercury or lead and inhaling high levels of these substances often can produce a metallic taste.

After reviewing these eight culprits  for  “what causes a metallic taste in your mouth”, I decided that oral hygiene was the most propable cause for the metallic taste. So I decided to find the best natural toothpaste to cure the metallic taste in my mouth.

Best Natural Toothpaste

During my research,  I saw an advertisement for a natural toothpaste called Superblue.  It is a non fluoride toothpaste that contains Nano Silver, Teatree Oil, Peppermint and Iodine.  I remembered how my husband told me about the great healing benefits that were in collidial silver and tea tree oil so I decided to order the non fluoride natural tootpaste.

The natural toothpaste was rather expensive, but I figured if it could remove the metallic taste in my mouth,  it was well worth it!  Anything was better than the anxiety I went  through because of the metallic taste  in my mouth in 1996.

I received the Superblue natural toothpaste in the mail just before Christmas. I  brushed my teeth with it two times, and walla! The metalic taste in my mouth disappeared! The metallic taste has not come back! I was able to enjoy all the great foods of Christmas!

Something else I want to mention. My gums tend to bleed when I floss, but since I have started using Superblue non fluoride natural toothpaste,  my gums have stopped bleeding.

Since Superblue is a natural toothpaste that is fluoride free and contains the healing properties of nano sliver and tea tree oil and the great taste of peppermint, I now use it every day!

This is the best natural toothpaste I have ever tried! I highly recommend Superblue non fluoride natural toothpaste to anyone who has problems with their gums or with a metallic taste in their mouth.  I’m telling you this really is the best natural toothpaste! It  really works!

You can find Superblue non fluoride natural toothpaste in my supplement store.

Dog Anxiety Cat Anxiety Horse Anxiety

In loving memory of our son’s first puppy, ‘Little Muffin’.

Dog Anxiety & Cat Anxiety

Unfortunately, pets get anxiety too! Thunderstorms, fireworks, going to the vet, riding in the car, door bells ringing, strangers and being left alone can all trigger dog anxiety and cat anxiety.

A seemingly normal calm animal can become an anxious animal after being exposed to a traumatic event such as abuse or exposure to daily stress like being left alone for long hours in a confined environment.

Did you know that an animal is very attuned to their owners emotions and when their owner is stressed they can become stressed too?

Signs of Dog Anxiety & Cat Anxiety

  • Hiding – Does you dog or cat run and hide during thunderstorms, when the doorbell rings, a stranger approaches or from the sound of fireworks? Hiding is a common reaction to fear.

  • Shaking & panting – If your pet shakes and pants during thunderstorms or fireworks they are probably experiencing dog anxiety or cat anxiety.

  • Chewing & Licking – Just like a nervous person chews on his/her nails, an anxious pet may chew on furniture or lick their paws  during a stressful event.

  • Seeking Comfort – During a thunderstorm or fireworks,  your dog or cat  may come to you for comfort.

  • Urinating or Defecating – When your pet is extremely anxious or scared they may urinate on the floor or in other inappropriate places.

Tips on How to Relieve Dog Anxiety & Cat Anxiety

  • Be consistent with the way you and your family react to your dog’s anxiety and your cat’s anxiety. Everyone needs to follow the same routine otherwise the pet will become confused.

  • Do not give your pet a different type of attention during a frightening episode this will only encourage the anxious behavior.

  • Never react to your pet’s anxiety and fear with anger. This will only result in adding more stress to your pet.

  • If you’re  anxious or afraid, your pet will pick up on your fear and this may make your pet more afraid too. Learn how to calm yourself or leave your pet with someone else during a foreseen stressful event.

  • During the fireworks or thunderstorm turn up the TV or the radio to drown out the noises. Provide a soft, cozy little area for your pet like a comfortable bed in a quite room that your pet can go to hide when they are scared.

  • Begin taking your pet on car rides, as well as acclimating him/her to loud noises, strangers, and children at an early age.

  • Make sure your pet gets a healthy diet and daily exercise. Exercise is essential in keeping your pet healthy and fit. Without exercise, your pet can become frustrated from boredom and act out through unwanted behaviors. Make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise on the day you know they’ll face a stressful event.

  • Some pets respond well to a pressure wrap. The gentle pressure of the wrap can help your pet feel more secure and less fearful. Wrap your pet right away if you know a storm is coming. This will help calm your pet before its fear increases and triggers unwanted behaviors.

  • Try using Appeasement pheromone natural products. They mimic the natural chemical signals in your pet that help them remain calm. These natural products come in the form of disposable collars, sprays and diffusers.

  • If your dog’s anxiety and cat’s anxiety is affecting his/her quality of life, you should consider consulting with an animal behaviorist. An animal behaviorist can help you modify your pet’s behavior.

Another approach to helping your pet calm down during periods of dog anxiety and cat anxiety is through the use of natural holistic homeopathic remedies.

These homeopathic remedies reduce separation anxiety and fear during stressful situations and everyday disturbances.

The Natural  Herbs for Dog Anxiety & Cat Anxiety I Suggest Are:

  • Lavender – Massage lavender oil on the pads of your dog’s feet to calm your dog’s anxiety.  It will be absorbed quickly into their system and it will not harm them if they lick their paws. You can also use a Lavender spray in their bedding.

  • Valerian – Valerian root is one of the most calming herbals for pets. Use the supplement developed for pets and give it to your pet hour or two before a stressful event.

  • Flower Essences– These natural herbs can be used in many different ways to calm dog anxiety and cat anxiety. You can add it to your pets water or even in its mouth. You can massage it into your pets fur or you can spray it on your pet’s bed or spray it on a bandana and place it around your dog’s neck.

  • Ashwagandha – This calming natural herb can help pets adapt to stressful situations. It can be given in your pet’s food everyday.

  • Catnip – This calming herb is also good for dog anxiety. It is a great option because you can grow your own as well as purchase it in a store.

Dog Anxiety & Cat Anxiety

The natural supplements & homeopathic remedies displayed below are excellent for dog anxiety and cat anxiety during separation, thunderstorms, and competitive events.

Bach Rescue Remedyis a great product! People come into my husband’s store all the time asking for Rescue Remedy. They say that when their dog is left alone at home, it works wonders on their dog’s anxiety.

Have you heard of the ThunderShirt? This shirt comfortably surrounds your pet providing pressure which relieves your dog’s anxiety. Try the pressure shirt displayed below next time your dog travels or is exposed to fireworks or a thunderstorm.

If you’re considering any herbal supplement as a treatment for dog anxiety or cat anxiety, talk to your veterinarian first, especially if your pet is taking other medications. The interaction of some herbal supplements and certain medications can cause serious side effects.

If your dog’s anxiety or your cat’s anxiety is interfering with daily activities, talk with your veterinarian. More serious forms of dog anxiety and cat anxiety may need medical treatment or behavioral modification therapy for symptoms to improve.

Echinacea for Anxiety

We all know that when anxiety takes hold of us, it can be hard to loosen its grip. Don’t let that fear take over your ability to live life to its fullest.  Instead, you can now find natural anxiety relief in a specially cultivated root extract of Echinacea.

A specially cultivated species of Echinacea has been shown to alleviate mild anxiety symptoms quickly and safely.  The Echinacea that you use for the common cold is not the same type of plant that can help relieve anxiety.

When various Echinacea plants were studied to test their potential to relieve anxiety, only one showed consistent results. It was a specially cultivated root extract of Echinacea angustifolia.

The laboratory results for Echinacea angustifolia were similar to those achieved with chlordiazepoxide except Echinacea agustifolia didn’t cause drowsiness or lethargy.

In a study published in Phytotherapy Research, researchers found that this special Echinacea extract significantly relieved anxiety within  three days.

This study consisted of  33 volunteers with mild anxiety. The participants took Echinacea angustifolia for one week. They were given an anxiety questionnaire to evaluate their anxiety levels before, during and after taking the Echinacea angustifolia tablets.

In the participating group that took 20 mg tablets twice per day, their anxiety scores decreased. The anxiety continued to decrease during the entire week of treatment. For the two weeks that followed the treatment, the participants remained with decreased anxiety levels even though they were no longer taking the tablets.

The findings of this study were exciting because the Echinacea angustifolia tablets worked so quickly! Many anti-anxiety medications and natural remedies can take weeks before relieving anxiety symptoms.

Dosage levels of this specialized echinacea extract are very important. Anxiety relief only occurs at low doses, and disappears when the dosage is greatly increased. If your dosage is too high, you may not obtain the anxiety relief you are looking for.

Our research indicates that to treat anxiety, 20-40 milligrams of echinacea should be taken by mouth daily for seven days. You should usually take no more than 20 mg at a time.  Occasionally you can take up to 40 mg if it is necessary for significant stress, tension and anxiety relief.   For people with only occasional bouts of anxiety it can be taken before a stressful event, such as public speaking.

The Echinacea augustifolia product we suggest is AnxioCalm by Terry Naturally .

Echinacea  augustifolia can be purchased from our Natural Supplements for Anxiety Store.  Please visit our store for natural anxiety supplements handpicked just for you!

Warning for Children with Anxiety (under 18 years old)

Increased risk of rash has been reported after the use of echinacea for  treatment in children aged 2-11 years. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), European Herbal Medicinal Products Committee (HMPC), and the UK Herbal Medicines Advisory Committee (HMAC) warn that children under 12 should avoid echinacea due to the risk of severe allergic reaction.

If you’re considering taking any herbal supplement as a treatment for anxiety, talk to your doctor first, especially if you take other medications. The interaction of some herbal supplements and certain medications can cause serious side effects.

By Kelly Carpo
I really like this book. The prayers and devotionals, I felt they were speaking to my heart. I’ve had anxiety attacks for many years but never though the troubles that were causing them were worth bothering God with. Now I understand He wants us to come to him for just such things. If you have anxiety and don’t know where to turn for answers I highly recommend this book.

By ChelseaN08
I like that this book is both a prayer book and a devotional all in one. The hymn quotes are beautiful. The topics that the author chose as themes for the prayers are topics we all can relate to – money worries, stress, feeling like we aren’t good enough, and so on. This is a very uplifting and encouraging book. It helped me to feel less worried and stressed. I will revisit this book whenever I feel worried or just need encouragement. Highly recommend this book.

By Victor
I thought the book was good, it was nice to start my day reminding me that God was with me and cared for me. I liked how the author used old hymns to also remind me of God’s love. The only thing I wish, is that she used more scripture verses, but it was still a good book and I looked forward to reading it every morning.

The devotions in this book will bring you to a place of peace and reverence that surpasses your understanding. You reflect on the absolute power and goodness of God and then your focus changes from anxious thought to love and praise of a loving father. Uplifting and encouraging, great read.

Sometimes in the midst of anxiety or panic you can’t find the words to pray, you can see the hope or good that is around you. This small prayer book will help you get started and help you focus on the truth of God’s word.

This is a great devotional, whether you are struggling with anxiety or just looking for another Christian devotional. The daily devos are a nice length and include relevant Bible passages. I especially liked Prayer Eight: My Safe Place of Peace.

Depression and Anxiety

Many people with anxiety disorders also suffer from some form of depression.

The depression can range from mild to severe depression.

If you suffer from anxiety or know someone who does, be on the look out for the warning signs of major depression. Most people who suffer from major depression often lack the ability to see whats happening to them. The presence of major depression can complicate the treatment of anxiety disorders.

The following is a list of symptoms to look for to help you determine if you are depressed and whether or not you may need to consult with a mental health professional.

Depression Symptoms

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depression is diagnosed when a person has many of the following symptoms and the depression is interfering with day to day activities such as work, school, sleeping, eating, and enjoying life.

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Irritability, restlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable
  • Fatigue and decreased energy
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
  • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
  • Overeating, or appetite loss
  • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
  • Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment.

Types of Depression

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there are several types of depression:

  • Major depression,—severe symptoms that interfere with your ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy life. An episode can occur only once in a person’s lifetime, but more often, a person has several episodes.
  • Persistent depressive disorder—depressed mood that lasts for at least 2 years. A person diagnosed with persistent depressive disorder may have episodes of major depression along with periods of less severe symptoms, but symptoms must last for 2 years.
  • Psychotic depression, which occurs when a person has severe depression plus some form of psychosis, such as having disturbing false beliefs or a break with reality (delusions), or hearing or seeing upsetting things that others cannot hear or see (hallucinations).
  • Postpartum depression, which is much more serious than the “baby blues” that many women experience after giving birth. It is estimated that 10 to 15 percent of women experience postpartum depression after giving birth.
  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is characterized by the onset of depression during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. The depression generally lifts during spring and summer.
  • Bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness, is not as common as major depression or persistent depressive disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by cycling mood changes—from extreme highs to extreme lows.

Childhood Depression

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Children who develop depression often continue to have episodes as they enter adulthood.

Depression in adolescence frequently co-occurs with other disorders such as anxiety, eating disorders, or substance abuse. It can also lead to increased risk for suicide.

A child with depression may pretend to be sick, refuse to go to school, cling to a parent, or worry that a parent may die. Older children may sulk, get into trouble at school, be negative and irritable, and feel misunderstood.

Depression during the teen years comes at a time of great personal change—when boys and girls are forming an identity apart from their parents, grappling with gender issues and emerging sexuality, and making independent decisions for the first time in their lives.

Childhood depression often persists, recurs, and continues into adulthood, especially if left untreated.

How to Fight Depression

Anxiety and depression can be triggered in many ways. For instance, chemical imbalance can be caused by too much sugar in the diet, wheat/gluten allergy, mold allergy, excess alcohol intake, vitamin deficiency, mineral deficiency, essential fatty acid deficiency, amino acid deficiency, allergies to additives and food coloring, exposure to toxic chemicals and heavy metals, and side effects to prescription medication.

When doctor’s and insurance companies  insist that  the sole treatment for chemical imbalance is prescription drugs we lose sight of the delicate biochemistry of the mind and body that can be manipulated by food and other medications.

Therefore, it is up to you to take charge of your own health and not just assume your anxiety & depression is from a chemical imbalance. For a more natural relief of your anxiety and depression, we recommend visiting a holistic doctor or a regular physician who offers a holistic approach to your health.

In addition, begin eating a wholesome organic diet, taking natural supplements, being active and exercising daily. Set realistic goals, break up large tasks into small ones and set priorities.

Try not to isolate yourself. Spend time with friends and find someone you can confide in. Try positive thinking by replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Finally, try simple relaxation techniques such as stretching and yoga to calm and relax your mind.

If you’re considering taking any herbal supplement as a treatment for anxiety, talk to your doctor first, especially if you take other medications. The interaction of some herbal supplements and certain medications can cause serious side effects.

If your anxiety is interfering with daily activities, talk with your doctor. More serious forms of anxiety generally need medical treatment or psychological counseling for symptoms to improve.

What is Social Anxiety

Social anxiety is a strong fear of being judged by others and

of being embarrassed. This fear can be so strong that it interferes with  daily life, such as going to work or school.

According to the National Comorbidity Survey, a U.S. poll on mental health, social anxiety disorder is the third most prevalent psychiatric disorder in Americans, after depression and alcohol dependence.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH ) 6.8 percent of U.S. adults and 5.5 percent of 13 to 15 year-olds are annually afflicted by social anxiety.

Most people have felt embarrassed or anxious  at times.  For instance, when they have to give a speech or attend a meeting where they have to meet new people.  However, people with social anxiety worry excessively about these social situations days or even weeks before they have to participate in them.

People with social anxiety are usually afraid of doing normal tasks in front of strangers such as signing a check, calling someone on the telephone, eating in front of other people, or using a public restroom.

People with social anxiety usually know that they shouldn’t be as afraid as they are, but they can’t help it. They may even avoid going to places and events that they really want to go to because they think they might have to do something that will embarrass them. (Check out our Top Picks for Quick Anxiety Relief.)

What Causes Social Anxiety?

No one knows for sure why some people have social anxiety and some people don’t. However, we do know that social anxiety sometimes runs in families.

Social anxiety usually begins in childhood and affects about 15 million American adults. Scientific research indicates that  several parts of the brain are involved in fear and anxiety. Scientists hope to be able to create better treatments for social anxiety by learning more about fear and anxiety in the brain.

Scientists are also conducting research to determine how stress and environmental factors play a role  in social anxiety.

What Symptoms Do People With Social Anxiety Experience?

  • They are very anxious around other people and find it difficult to join in conversation, even though they wish they could.
  • They get embarrassed easily and are very self-conscious in front of other people.
  • They feel that other people are judging them.
  • They worry excessively for days or weeks before an event where they have to  speak in public or have to meet new people.
  • They avoid places where there are other people.
  • They find it difficult to make and keep friends.
  • They easily blush, sweat, or tremble around other people.
  • They often feel nauseous or experience an upset stomach when they are with other people.

Social Anxiety Diagnosis

If a person started having social anxiety symptoms at a young age and has had social anxiety symptoms for at least 6 months, a doctor may be able to form a social anxiety disorder diagnosis. Without treatment, social anxiety can last for many years or a lifetime.

After a person discusses their symptoms with their doctor, the doctor should do an exam to rule out any other physical problems that might be causing the symptoms.

What are some Treatments for Social Anxiety?

The most common type of therapy used for social anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT teaches a person different ways of thinking, behaving, and reacting to fearful situations. Cognitive behavioral therapy also includes teaching hands on social skills, which are practiced during therapy.

Medication is often prescribed to help treat social anxiety. The most commonly prescribed medications for social anxiety are anti-anxiety medications and antidepressants. There are many different types of anti-anxiety medications.  Some of these medications begin working right away, but should not be taken over a long period of time.

Some doctors, especially holistic doctors, may recommend  natural supplements for anxiety as a treatment plan for anxiety.  There are many natural supplements that can help relieve social anxiety symptoms. We recommend the following natural supplements:

Omega-3
Chamomile
Lemon Balm
Passion Flower
Kava Kava
Valerian Root
5-HTP
St. John’s Wort
Gaba
Sam-E
Rhodiola
L-Arginine
L-Lysine
L-Tyrosine
L-Theanine

B Vitamins for Anxiety

During high levels of stress the B Vitamins are burned up and consumed at higher levels. Research has shown that the majority of the emotionally ill are deficient in one or more of the B-complex vitamins. Studies also show that the B vitamins are natural stress reducers and that not getting enough of them can cause anxiety.

  • Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) helps relieve irritability, improve concentration, increase energy, and maintain a healthy nervous system.
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine) can help alleviate depression and anxiety attacks.
  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) aids in the production of natural antidepressants such as dopamine and norepinephrine. The body requires B6 to make serotonin.
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin) helps with anxious feelings and is calming.

The best Vitamin B products that I just described are listed in order below: (B12, B1, B6, B3 and a B-Complex)

One in Seven people do not effectively break down folate or B12 in the liver. Therefore, it is important to use only the Methyl form of B Complex Vitamins.

The suggested use is to take one 100 mg time released B-complex vitamin daily after a meal. It is suggested that if you are going through a very stressful period of time that you take a vitamin B3 in the form of niacinamide at 100 mg three times a day.

Since everyone is different, consult  with your doctor regarding the appropriate dosage for your individual needs.

Hair Growth Tips

I was blow drying my hair when I noticed it was gone.  ” Where is it? Where did it go?” I shouted.

“Tim, what happened to my bald spot and why is my hair suddenly thicker? What’s up with my nails – they don’t break anymore?” I exclaimed.

You see, Tim, my husband, is the expert when it comes to knowing what makes hair grow, nails strong, cholesterol low, and  heart strong. You name it, and he knows the cure. He has been studying this stuff for over 40 years.

“Well, what have you been eating lately and what supplements are you taking?” He asked.

“Well,  for the last three months my breakfast has consisted of gluten free pancakes combined with sunflower seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, cinnamon and ginger.” I explained.

I continued. “My daily supplement routine consists of  Vitamin B12,    Omega-3, Multi-Vitamins, L-tyrosine, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Beta Carotene, Calcium, Magnesium, and Choline & Inositol.  When I’m feeling anxious, I take Gabatrol or ZenX.”

Without hesitating he explained, “That’s easy, it’s from the natural supplements choline & inositol, omega-3, and the B vitamins you’re taking.  The natural supplements combined with the sunflower, chia and flax seeds  result in hair growth.”

He continued. “Choline speeds up hair growth. The sunflower seeds contain B vitamins, zinc, vitamin E and are rich in biotin.”

“The B Vitamins are specific for hair thickness and growth. Biotin strengthens hair and nails.  In addition, they assist in reversing hair loss.” He added.

“You know,” he clarified, “the B vitamins, biotin, zinc and vitamin E in the sunflower seeds combined with the omega-3 in the flax seeds and chia seeds, make a great combination for hair thickness and growth!”

“Oh yea!” He said with a sheepish grin. “Did I mention it’s good for your skin too? I thought you were looking a lot younger lately!”

With a giddy smile I remarked, “Oh, you smooth talker.”

It’s true my hair is thicker and my bald spot is gone. My nails are growing like crazy and they don’t split or break anymore.

I have been taking my supplements consistently and eating very natural food now for about six months. I am just trying to be healthier and trying to control my anxiety. I wasn’t expecting all of these other benefits.

As I discover positive changes in my body from taking natural supplements and from eating a more natural diet, I will share them with you. Hopefully, sharing my experiences will help you too!

My husband has been in the organic food and natural supplement industry for over 40 years.  He has a thorough knowledge of the top supplement manufacturers.

He knows which ones use the best processes to make their products and which ones use the best wholesome, organic ingredients.

The following is a list of some of the best supplement manufactures that my husband recommends. Note, they are not in any particular order. We do not recommend one over the other.

Note: You can find a list of products we recommend in our supplement store

Standard Process

Standard Process made the list as one of the best supplement manufacturers because they invest in robust research and development. Their scientists main focus is to provide a scientific basis for the safety and effectiveness of their supplements.

The source of high-quality raw materials used in their supplements come from their 420 acres of organic farmland in Wisconsin.

Standard Process products can only be purchased through a health care professional. We purchase ours through our local chiropractor.

I take that back! I just searched for some of their products on Amazon.com and they sell them. We recommend these Standard Process supplements:

CataplexB

Tuna Omega 3 Oil

Trace Minerals B12

Catalyn 360 Tabs.

Natures Plus

The reason Natures Plus made the list as one of the best supplement manufactures is because of their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Their facilities are FDA registered and NSF certified. They insure GMP standards and their research and development are ongoing. In addition, their supplements are based on solid, scientific findings. They even have a 100% consumer satisfaction guarantee. The products we recommend are in our Supplement Store.

Pure Essence Labs

Pure Essence made the list as one of the best supplement manufacturers because they embraced the GMP standards and built their own quality assurance laboratory.

They test the raw materials of their suppliers to make sure they are using only the purest, safest and best quality ingredients available. If their tests do not validate what the supplier has stated on the Certificate of Analysis, Pure Essence Labs will find a new supplier. No compromises and no excuses. This is the Pure Essence promise. The products we recommend are in our Supplement Store.

GAIA

GAIA made the list for one of the best supplement manufacturers because of the process they live by in their equation  “Purity + Integrity = Potency.” Their plants must meet or exceed their exacting standards for purity.

Crops are harvested at the peak of bioactivity and the crops key bioactive constituents are validated and verified in their laboratory. Their biologist personally inspects and analyzes each batch to confirm its identity and to make sure the plants were not damaged during shipment.

They also test to make sure there are no pesticides, heavy metals, chemical contaminants, salmonella, E. coli, mold, yeast or other microbial contaminants.  If the shipment fails to meet these standards, it is immediately destroyed.

GAIA use full-spectrum processing to maintain the integrity of each individual plant. The products we recommend are in our Supplement Store.

New Chapter

New Chapter is one of the best supplement manufacturers because they were the first company to produce a full line of whole food complexed vitamins and supplements certified with organic ingredients.

New Chapter is dedicated to scientific validation. They use modern science to guide them in the formulation of their products. Their scientific team consists of some of the world’s most respected scientists.

They do not source out all their ingredients. They grow some of the organic ingredients on their own biodynamic farm in Costa Rica. Their products that we recommend are in our hand selected Supplement Store

These are just a few of the best supplement manufactures that we recommend.  Other great manufacturers are Nordic Naturals, Life Extension, Herb Pharm, Solgar, Natural Factors, Jarrow, Twin Labs, Source Naturals, Natrol, Native Remedies and Doctor’s Best. You can link to them from our Hand Selected Supplement Store.

My husband recently brought home a product called Happy Camper
for me to try.  It worked so quickly to relieve my anxiety.

I  was surprised that it worked so well.  Sometimes I get a headache after taking Stress Response or ZenX but Happy Camper did not give me a headache.

I was very pleased with Happy Camper because it worked so quickly. I experienced  anxiety relief  within 30 minutes.

Natural Supplements for Anxiety

A new site has opened to the delight of people suffering from anxiety. In fact, the site http://naturalsupplementsforanxiety.org

is for everyone who wants to find natural relief from their anxiety symptoms.

We are excited as a new site opened it’s doors on April 4, 2014. This site is dedicated to nothing but helping people who suffer from anxiety find relief for their symptoms. “This site is dedicated to helping them find natural and  alternative treatments instead of relying on prescription medication.” said Sandra Montanaro, the sites creator.

The sites creator, Sandra Montanaro, states that the reason she started this online business is that until she met her husband, she and her family members had suffered from anxiety for practically their entire lives.

It wasn’t  until she  met her husband, who had been in the macrobiotic and natural supplement industry for 40 years, that she began her journey to end the use of prescription anti-anxiety meds. With his guidance, she learned to control her anxiety through the use of natural supplements, diet, exercise and alterntaive treatments.

Because of her experience with anxiety, she knows how out of control anxiety can make you  feel and how the over reliance on anti-anxiety medications can make you gain weight, make you tired, and zap you of all your emotions. She wants to help people get their natural emotions back and help others stop being tired and fat from the side effects of their anti-anxiety medications. She states that this can be done if you use the natural supplements and alternative treatments that work.

The goal of her website is to guide her readers through the different brands of natural supplements for anxiety on the market. Through her husbands expertise, advise from experts and her own experiences, she hopes to guide her readers into making an educated decision on what natural anxiety supplements are best for them. She states that everyone is different, what works for one person may not work for everyone. The  goal is to find the supplement and alternative treatment that is going to work the best for each individual.

Ms. Montanaro states that not all natural supplements are the same. The way the supplements are processed determines the actual quality of the product. Her husband knows from his experience in the natural supplement industry which products work  best for his customers. He only recommends the natural supplements for anxiety that he received the most positive comments from. Tim Montanaro, Sandra’s husband stated,  “Repeat customers are the key! When a customer returns over and over again for the same product, you know it works!”

While passing through the site at http://naturalsupplementsforanxiety.org it  was clear that anxiety relief is exactly what they’re in business for. One who would browse the links alone would see top name brand products, product reviews, alternative treatments, and information on anxiety disorders.  There is even an area in the site that connects buyers to a  hand selected supplement store where they can purchase the best anxiety products available.
