Caffeine & Anxiety

I woke up this morning feeling so great because of the beautiful day! I couldn’t wait to get started.

I drank my morning cup of joe, ate my breakfast and about 30 minutes later started to feel a little irritable. I knew that if I took a walk, my feel good endorphins would kick in and I would feel a lot better.

I went for my walk and was feeling on top of the world. I came up with some new, creative ideas and couldn’t wait to get home to write them down and to start my research on them.

When I arrived back home, I decided to eat lunch and drink some good old fashioned southern iced tea. After drinking the tea, I sat down to start researching some of my new ideas. However, I noticed that I was so anxious, I couldn’t even think straight. My mind was foggy and I was shaking from anxiety. I couldn’t work at all. It was a waste of time.

I decided to go for another walk to clear my mind. During my walk, it dawned on me that the reason I was feeling so anxious and foggy headed was from the tea I drank. It was the caffeine! Oh my goodness, I never realized what a negative affect caffeine had on my anxiety. Needless to say, after my experience today, I am going to take caffeinated tea off my daily menu.

Wow! Until today, I did not realize what an affect caffeine had on my anxiety! I did a little research and this is what I found:

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) ninety percent of Americans use caffeine daily, some substituting it for sleep. While the stimulant enhances alertness and concentration, it’s been unclear whether it also helps learning and memory. The NIMH also states that since caffeine can aggravate the symptoms of anxiety disorders, it should be avoided.

Caffeine works by blocking the depressant function of a chemical called adenosine and usually results in a pleasurable feeling. However, if you drink too much coffee or tea, this same stimulant can exacerbate anxiety and panic disorders. If you are predisposed to anxiety, the caffeine can trigger a full blown anxiety attack and cause you to break out in a cold sweat, experience a racing or pounding heart, hear ringing in the ears and lose the ability to focus.

In conclusion, If you tend to be a person who has anxiety, using a lot of caffeine can be risky. The use of caffeine may be adding more stress to your life. You may be able to improve the quality of your life by simply cutting caffeine out of your diet. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to quit caffeine for a little while or switch to de-caffeinated and see if your anxiety symptoms improve.
